The Board of Directors of the Environment Protection Fund approved, during a meeting held at the Ministry of Environment and chaired by Minister of Environment Dr. Ayman Suleiman, a package of environmental and development projects aimed at protecting the environment, ensuring the sustainability of natural resources, and enhancing the participation of local communities in achieving sustainable environmental development.
As part of the Environment Protection Fund’s project cycle, which focuses on empowering youth and women in rural areas, supporting environmentally oriented productive projects, strengthening food security, preserving ecosystems, implementing water-harvesting projects, and expanding green spaces, the board approved support for several projects submitted by civil society organizations.
These include the Petra Springs Environmental Association, which will implement the “Petra Biscuit House” project; the Basmat Al-Khair Cooperative Women’s Association, which will implement the “Water-Harvesting Wells and Home Gardens” project; the Himmat Women of Balqa Charity Association, which will implement the “Map and Fabric” project; the Jordan Environment Society, which will implement the “Empowering Rural Community Participation in Achieving Environmental Justice” project; and the Badia Hands Agricultural Cooperative Society, which will implement a project to dry vegetables and fruits using renewable energy.
The board also approved support for several projects aimed at rehabilitating and developing nature reserves and natural sites, including the Yarmouk Nature Reserve, Mujib Nature Reserve, Azraq Wetlands, Dana Nature Reserve, and Baraka Al-Araies, helping protect biodiversity, ensure the sustainability of these sites, and improve their efficiency.
The board further approved support for a project to rehabilitate and operate the Mujib Agricultural Project and transform it into an advanced national model for modern agriculture. The project will also include the establishment of a specialized applied agricultural academy focusing on non-traditional crops, with the aim of providing young people with practical training and qualifications in innovative and environmentally friendly farming methods, while enhancing their opportunities for empowerment and entry into the labor market.
The board also decided to support the establishment of an environmental park in the Pilgrims’ City (Al-Waha) in Ma’an Governorate, as well as an environmental park at Aqaba University College, contributing to the provision of green spaces and promoting environmental awareness and sustainable practices among local communities.
The board also approved support for a project aimed at producing outdoor seating and waste containers from recycled plastic materials and distributing them in public parks and recreational areas. The project is intended to encourage waste recycling, support industries and innovations based on the circular economy, and promote the sustainable use of resources.
The Ministry of Environment said that support for these projects comes within the Environment Protection Fund’s efforts to finance initiatives and projects that generate sustainable environmental and developmental impacts, support local communities, create opportunities for youth and women, protect natural resources, and promote the green economy.
The ministry announced that it plans to open applications for support under the Environment Protection Fund’s 2027 project cycle during the final quarter of this year. The conditions and criteria for applications, mechanisms for benefiting from the funding, and other details of the cycle will be announced at the time.
