Wheat and barley reserves sufficient for nearly 10 months; essential commodities for 2–4 months

Updated:

The Ministry of Industry, Trade and Supply confirmed the adequacy and strength of the Kingdom’s strategic reserves of basic food commodities and materials, noting their availability in safe and stable quantities covering local needs for comfortable timeframes. This comes as part of the immediate implementation of royal directives aimed at strengthening the strategic reserve, carried out through an exemplary and integrated partnership with the private sector to reinforce the national food security system.

The strategic reserve adequacy report issued by the Ministry as of yesterday morning, Tuesday (August 4, 2026), showed complete stability in the balance of essential food supplies in the Kingdom’s warehouses, supported by contracts and incoming shipments agreed upon in close coordination with traders, importers, and the industrial sector.

The report detailed that the actual available reserve balance of wheat in warehouses stands at approximately 610,000 tons, a quantity sufficient for local consumption for 6.4 months based on a monthly consumption rate of 95,000 tons. The Ministry added that contracted wheat quantities currently en route total 302,000 tons, covering an additional 3.2 months, bringing total strategic wheat sufficiency to 9.6 months.

Regarding barley, data revealed the availability of 609,000 tons in warehouses, sufficient for 7 months, supplemented by 220,000 tons contracted en route covering 2.5 months, raising total barley reserve sufficiency to 9.5 months.

The report noted that reserves for other basic food commodities remain at safe and stable levels ranging between approximately 2 and 4 months. Sugar reserves are sufficient for about two and a half months, rice covers around three and a half months, vegetable oil reserves of various types range between two and a half to nearly three months, while legume reserves range between two and four months depending on the variety.

Additionally, powdered milk reserves are sufficient for about three months, while feed corn reserves exceed three months, with contracted shipments continuing to flow to boost reserve levels and meet local market demands.

The Ministry emphasized that success in fortifying the strategic reserve is the fruit of direct coordination and collaborative work with the Jordan Chamber of Commerce, the Jordan Chamber of Industry, traders, and importers. This ensures supply stability, source diversification, streamlined clearance and import procedures, and ongoing tracking of global and local prices to guarantee commodity availability at fair prices for citizens.

The Ministry of Industry, Trade and Supply reaffirmed the continuation of its inspection tours and ongoing monitoring of all supply chains to swiftly handle any variables, ensuring the sustainability of the Kingdom’s food security.
