Ammon News – Jordan on February 6, 2026, acceded to the 1992 United Nations Convention on the Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes (UN-Water Convention), a move aimed at strengthening german-president-visits-sesame-reviews-scientific-cooperation/”>cooperation on shared water resources in one of the world’s most water-scarce regions. This accession follows Iraq’s accession in 2023, thus broadening the region’s participation in the Convention.

Emphasizing the importance of joining the agreement, Minister of Water and Irrigation, Eng. Raed Abu Al-Saud, said that water is a national priority for Jordan, as Jordan’s accession to the United Nations Water Convention will enhance cooperation with neighboring countries, allow for the exchange of experiences with countries facing similar challenges, and push towards sustainable water management that is resilient to climate change, to address the relationship between climate and refugees for current and future generations.

This effort also underscores Jordan’s commitment ahead of the 2026 UN Water Conference, and Jordan’s participation will contribute to accelerating the implementation of the recently updated National Water Strategy 2023-2040, which sets out a long-term plan to address contemporary water challenges.

Water security is a national priority, supported at the highest political levels and backed by sustainable government investments in the water sector.
